How it Started: Rob Shirley
In 1968, Rob Shirley set out with a simple but ambitious goal—to build the best ski boat in the game. A passionate waterskier himself, Rob spent countless hours on the water and understood exactly what athletes needed behind the boat. But at the time, the boats on the market weren’t meeting those expectations.
Rather than settling for what existed, Rob decided to build something better.
His vision centered on creating a ski boat with superior turning, impeccable tracking, and clean, consistent wakes—the key ingredients for an exceptional waterskiing experience. That vision would eventually grow into what is now known around the world as MasterCraft.
Building the First MasterCraft
Rob began small—very small. In the early days, he built one boat at a time, working alongside just one other person. Crafting a single boat took two to three weeks, with every detail carefully shaped by hand.
In 1968, that dedication resulted in the very first MasterCraft ski boat—an innovative 18-foot vessel that would forever change the towboat industry.
The boat wasn’t just designed for watersports; it was purpose-built for them. Rob applied his knowledge as a skier to engineer a boat that delivered the performance riders had always wanted but never truly had.
Growth on the Water
What started as a small operation quickly gained attention among watersports enthusiasts. Word spread about the performance and craftsmanship of the boats Rob was building.
Before long, the small shop that once produced a single boat every few weeks had scaled dramatically—eventually reaching production of up to five boats a day. What began as a passion project between two people had transformed into a growing company with a reputation for excellence.
Yet even as the company expanded, the philosophy behind every boat remained the same.
A TRADITION THAT CONTINUES TODAY
The very first MasterCraft boat was built by hand. Almost 60 years later, that tradition continues.
Every MasterCraft is still meticulously handcrafted, built by skilled engineers and passionate boaters who carry forward the legacy started by Rob Shirley. While technology and performance have evolved, the commitment to craftsmanship has never changed.
As we approach 60 years of MasterCraft’s legacy, it’s a reminder that the company was never just about building boats—it was about building them the right way.
The Legacy of a Vision
What began in 1968 with a waterskier determined to build the best ski boat in the industry has grown into one of the most respected names in towboats.
From one boat every few weeks to multiple boats every day, the journey of MasterCraft reflects the same passion that started it all.
