alternator replacement 88 indmar 351
hey guys .either my battery is on the way out or my alt is going . just was wondering what you would replace this one with it is a prestolite one all the serial and model numbers are rubbed off. it does look ugly . i'm not sure if it is charging very well. guage only shows around 12volts and when i turn the blower on it drops to 10 volts . i have not checked the votlage at the battery to see what is going on there after it is running .im not even sure if the guage is accurate. anyways here is a pic ..it looks pretty ugly .
what do you suggest for a replacement or upgrade . there are alot of cheaper priced marine alts on ebay. also i am runnnig 1 180 watt amp for my sub . not sure if this is the culprit on my weak batteries . also what do the wires do attatched to it . one orange goes to selenoid for charging i presume and one skinnier purple one . is the purple one a voltage sensing or a exiter wire. how would i hook up a new one ? skidims also offers a upgraded different looking one. ,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

180 watts needs 15 amps if did the arithmetic correctly. I got this one to replace my orgininal... yes orange charge - purple exciter.
http://napaonline.com/Catalog/Catalo...5PS_0381521297 Does Canada Napa have a power sports line? Man..that thing is corroded....the prestolite part is the regulator and rectifier....

thanks for the quick reply . how do you hook that one up ?
mine is ugly for sure. previous owner had it in the salt. i can also hit Napa across the line i am 10 mins from the border . it would probably be cheaper there anyway. any other alt with more amps that would work. or is 55 enough with an amp? ![]() Quote:

should be okay...180 watts only 15 amps... but I am not an expert.....
to hook up... go purple to purple and red to the pos+ I just took off the extra red wire...not needed for my application or yours I believe.

Bought a Marine starter for my 88 190 a couple of years ago from DB Electric, believe they sell alternators as well and are very competitively priced. No issues with my starter! |
