2008 British Waterski Yorkshire and Humberside Awards Evening
February 27, 2008

Saturday 23rd of February saw Roger Thorpe manor as the venue for the annual Yorkshire and Humberside BWS regions award ceremony.

Now in it’s fourth year and going from strength to strength, this years event was a sell out with over 180 people in attendance. With the 7 clubs in the region all having a strong presence and getting involved in the overall night.

The event is the result of an idea started at the Local Regions Meetings 5 years ago and a lot of hard work and effort put in by the committee and in particular one man and his family, Brian Rook. Each year Brian along with the committee has seen the event grow, pushing more people to attend and get involved. This in return as seen many youngsters getting more involved in the sport at competition levels, and after a spell of 2 years not fielding a team in the Kids Coaching Competition held annually, where each region around the UK do battle for the KCC title, we have managed to put together a very successful team thanks to the support of parents and volunteers alike. Through more events in the region and social gatherings such as this!

So for 2008 each club was allowed to nominate 2 people for awards, either for outstanding achievements or services to their individual club / sport.

The evening was once again hosted by Simon Waring of MasterCraft GB, who year upon year offer support to the region with events, management and giving of time to help bring the region together.

With the awards handed out to the winners below, it was time for a few special mentions, in particular the KCC for 2007 the Yorkshire and Humberside Region fielded a team of youngsters who traveled to Northampton and over the course of the weekend managed to successfully bring home the KCC trophy for the first time ever. With many of the teams youngsters and parents at the awards, the official hand over of the trophy was done. A superb presentation slide show was shown put together by Perry Lux father of one of the competitors. This slide show got everyone in the room not knowing to cheer or cry, put together with mood music, the slide show did a great job of catching the whole mood of the team, the parents and indeed the weekend as a whole. And for those not fortunate enough to have been there to share the experience, a great taster of what they missed.

The KCC is a big achievement for the region and acknowledgments were made to the many people who made it happen. Brian Rook and Mike Clarke who happily not only drove for the full event, but drove for training days prior to allow the team to train, Tony Green who was the birth brain behind the KCC and a big pusher within the region to get the kids involved, Andy Knowles who gave up time to coaching of all the children during the run up to the event, the judges of Mark and Dawn Garnet who tirelessly are involved with one of the hardest jobs of the KCC, Simon Waring who has supported the KCC with boats and logistics since it’s birth, and finally but by no means least, the competitors and all the parents and volunteers who helped make it happen.

Finally the Regions chairman Dave Field gave a speech and presented the main man behind the event Brian Rook with an ultimate reward. Honoree membership of the BWS, Brian as ever was a man of few words, but the whole room and region and indeed BWS as a whole know that if anyone deserves such an accolade it is this man.

So with all the emotion out of the way it was time for top class comedian Lea Roberts to steal the lime light for 40 minutes with just the right style of humour. The whole place was crying with laughter at his witty, quick thinking comedy.

Then it was time for the MasterCraft X-Stars to rock for the last 2 hours and with everyone in good spirits the whole place was up singing and dancing.

So a great night was had by all, and now we’re all geared for the season and looking forward to it!

So roll on the season and let’s make the 2009 annual bash even bigger!
